Glenn Maxwell has retired from T20 International cricket, Cricket Australia's cricket.com.au reported on 2 November 2026, bringing his Australian career to a close. The 38-year-old allrounder has also ended his List A career, and has not played a first-class match since 2023.
Maxwell had already retired from ODI cricket in June last year. He was the oldest player in Australia's T20 World Cup campaign at the beginning of this year, and those matches were the last of a 13-year, 130-game T20I career. Australia have played three T20Is since, in Bangladesh, where younger players were introduced.
What Was Announced
- Retirement from T20 International cricket, after 130 matches across 13 years.
- Retirement from List A cricket. His last games were a couple of one-day matches for Victoria.
- He leaves first-class cricket too, having last played a first-class match in 2023.
Maxwell finishes as Australia's third-highest T20I run scorer with 2,897 runs, behind David Warner and Aaron Finch. He is one of two batters, alongside India's Rohit Sharma, with five T20I centuries. The first was 145 not out from 65 balls, with nine sixes, as an opener in Pallekele. The other four came from number four between 2018 and 2024. He hit the winning runs in Australia's 2021 T20 World Cup triumph.
Speaking on the Final Word podcast, Maxwell said there had been "numerous discussions before and after the T20 World Cup" and that there was no pressure from Australia team management. He said telling his Victoria team-mates was "probably harder than I thought it was going to be".
What It Means
Maxwell will continue to play for Melbourne Stars, with whom he is contracted until the end of the 2027-28 season, as he chases a first Big Bash title. He said he needed to spend "a little bit more time investing in the body" and would manage his knee to be ready for the BBL. The Stars open their season against Adelaide at the MCG on 18 December.
