Cricket Australia has announced that Mike Hussey will join the Australian men's team as a consultant coach for next year's Ashes and ODI World Cup in southern Africa. The 51-year-old will also act as T20 advisor ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
What Was Announced
According to Cricket Australia, Hussey will start almost immediately. He will provide coaching assistance during the five-match T20I series against England, which begins later this month, and during this summer's Test series against New Zealand.
Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia's general manager of national teams, said the T20 advisor role would see Hussey provide a range of specific expertise, including campaign strategies, opposition insights, player scouting and performance.
Hussey said he was thrilled to be back with the team in a more formal and meaningful role. "This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period," he said.
Head coach Andrew McDonald said: "Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players."
What It Means
Cricket Australia said the appointment strengthens the national men's coaching team ahead of two years of high-profile series and global events. Hussey has filled similar roles with the team in recent summers, and his coaching work since retiring in 2016 includes time with the Australia and England national teams.
His first assignment is the T20I series against England, scheduled as follows:
- 1st T20I: 21 November 2026, MCG
- 2nd T20I: 24 November 2026, Gold Coast Stadium
- 3rd T20I: 27 November 2026, The Gabba
- 4th T20I: 29 November 2026, SCG
- 5th T20I: 2 December 2026, Manuka Oval
