Shubman Gill scored 890 runs in IPL 2023, more than any batter has scored in a single IPL season except Virat Kohli's 973 in 2016. Yet the more remarkable number from that spring is 37: the count of 200-plus totals posted across the 2023 season, more than double the 18 recorded in 2022 and more than in any previous IPL season in the Cricsheet record.
Most retrospectives of 2023 tell the story of Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni's fifth title, decided on a rain-soaked reserve day in Ahmedabad on 29 May 2023. That story is told in full in our IPL 2023 CSK title deep-dive. This piece follows a different thread: how a 23-year-old opener from Fazilka produced one of the great individual seasons at the exact moment the competition's scoring ceiling broke, and why every IPL season since, including IPL 2026, still runs on the rules set in 2023.
The Season the Ceiling Broke
A new rule, a new arithmetic
The 2023 season, which opened on 31 March 2023 with Gujarat Titans beating Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad, was the first to use the Impact Player rule. Each side could name substitutes and bring one on during the match, which in practice meant an extra specialist batter or bowler every night. Batting line-ups could run deeper, so top orders batted with less fear of a collapse. The effect showed up in the scorebook almost immediately.
Across the 2023 league and playoffs, the average first-innings score rose to 182.7, up from 171.1 in 2022. The overall run rate across the first two innings of every match climbed from 8.50 to 8.96 runs per over. For context, the run rate had sat between 8.01 and 8.60 every season from 2018 to 2022. In 2023 it jumped by nearly half a run per over in one year.
Where the extra runs came from
The 2023 phase splits show that the inflation was not limited to the last five overs. Teams scored at 8.72 per over in the powerplay, 8.43 through overs 7 to 15 and 10.48 in the death overs. The middle overs, traditionally the slowest part of a T20 innings, kept pace with the powerplay. With an extra batter in reserve, sides stopped consolidating between overs 7 and 15.
Twelve individual centuries were scored in 2023, from Harry Brook's 100 for Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens on 14 April 2023 to Cameron Green's 100 at the Wankhede on 21 May 2023. Venkatesh Iyer struck 104 for Kolkata Knight Riders against Mumbai Indians on 16 April 2023, KKR's first IPL century since Brendon McCullum's 158* on the opening night of 2008. Yashasvi Jaiswal made 124 off 62 balls at the Wankhede on 30 April 2023, and still finished on the losing side.
The chase stopped being scary
The clearest sign of the new arithmetic was what happened to 200. Eight times in 2023 a side successfully chased a target of 200 or more. Lucknow Super Giants chased 213 at the Chinnaswamy on 10 April 2023 off the final ball. Sunrisers Hyderabad chased 215 in Jaipur on 7 May 2023. Mumbai Indians did it four times, against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad, chasing 200 against RCB inside 17 overs on 9 May 2023.
The night that best captured the mood came on 9 April 2023 in Ahmedabad. KKR needed 29 off the last over against Gujarat Titans. Rinku Singh hit Yash Dayal for five consecutive sixes, and a target of 205 was reached. The full reconstruction is in our Rinku Singh five-sixes feature.
Shubman Gill's 890: Anatomy of a Great Season
A slow start, by his own later standards
For the first half of the 2023 season, Shubman Gill was very good without being historic. He opened with 63 against Chennai on 31 March 2023 and added 67 at Mohali on 13 April 2023 and 56 against Mumbai on 25 April 2023, but also recorded a duck against Lucknow on 22 April 2023 and two scores of 6. After ten innings he had 375 runs, a strong season's work but not yet a record-chasing one.
Seven innings, 515 runs
What followed between 7 May and 29 May 2023 is among the most dominant stretches in IPL history. Over his final seven innings Gill scored 515 runs:
| Date (2023) | Opponent | Score | Balls | Stage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 May | Lucknow Super Giants | 94* | 51 | League |
| 12 May | Mumbai Indians | 6 | 9 | League |
| 15 May | Sunrisers Hyderabad | 101 | 58 | League |
| 21 May | Royal Challengers Bangalore | 104* | 52 | League |
| 23 May | Chennai Super Kings | 42 | 38 | Qualifier 1 |
| 26 May | Mumbai Indians | 129 | 60 | Qualifier 2 |
| 29 May | Chennai Super Kings | 39 | 20 | Final |
The unbeaten 94 came in Gujarat's 227/2 against Lucknow on 7 May 2023. The 101 against Sunrisers on 15 May 2023 was his first IPL hundred. The third century, 129 off 60 balls in Qualifier 2 on 26 May 2023, drove Gujarat to 233/3, the third-highest total of the season. Mohit Sharma then took 5 for 10 and Mumbai were bowled out for 171.
The night he ended Kohli's season
The 104 at the Chinnaswamy on 21 May 2023 decided more than one result. Royal Challengers Bangalore needed to win to reach the playoffs, and [Virat Kohli](/players/virat-kohli) had given them 197/5 with 101, his second century in four days after his 100 against Sunrisers in Hyderabad on 18 May 2023. Two centuries in one match was unusual enough. Gill's 104* off 52 balls won the chase with four balls to spare, ended RCB's season and opened the final playoff place for Mumbai Indians. Kohli finished the season with 639 runs and two hundreds. Gill finished it holding the Orange Cap.
How he scored
Gill's 2023 numbers by phase show a batter who was not just a powerplay accumulator:
- Powerplay (overs 1–6): 356 runs off 236 balls, strike rate 150.8
- Middle overs (7–15): 429 runs off 272 balls, strike rate 157.7
- Death overs (16–20): 105 runs off 56 balls, strike rate 187.5
He made 85 fours and 33 sixes, averaged 59.33 and struck at 157.8 across 17 innings. Only Faf du Plessis (36) and Shivam Dube (35) hit more sixes that season.
Data Deep-Dive: IPL 2023 by the Numbers
The leading run-scorers
| Batter | Team (2023) | Runs | Avg | SR | 100s | 50s | HS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shubman Gill | GT | 890 | 59.33 | 157.8 | 3 | 4 | 129 |
| Faf du Plessis | RCB | 730 | 56.15 | 153.7 | 0 | 8 | 84 |
| Devon Conway | CSK | 672 | 51.69 | 139.7 | 0 | 6 | 92 |
| Virat Kohli | RCB | 639 | 53.25 | 139.8 | 2 | 6 | 101* |
| Yashasvi Jaiswal | RR | 625 | 48.08 | 163.6 | 1 | 5 | 124 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | MI | 605 | 43.21 | 181.1 | 1 | 5 | 103* |
| Ruturaj Gaikwad | CSK | 590 | 42.14 | 147.5 | 0 | 4 | 92 |
| Rinku Singh | KKR | 474 | 59.25 | 149.5 | 0 | 4 | 67* |
The gap between first and second place is 160 runs. In most IPL seasons the Orange Cap is decided by a few dozen runs; in 2023 Gill was in a separate category. Suryakumar Yadav's strike rate of 181.1 over 605 runs is the other standout figure in the table, and it was central to Mumbai's run of high chases.
The leading wicket-takers
| Bowler | Team (2023) | Wkts | Econ | Avg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mohammed Shami | GT | 28 | 7.99 | 18.61 |
| Mohit Sharma | GT | 27 | 8.17 | 13.37 |
| Rashid Khan | GT | 27 | 8.24 | 20.44 |
| Piyush Chawla | MI | 22 | 8.11 | 22.50 |
| Yuzvendra Chahal | RR | 21 | 8.18 | 20.57 |
Gujarat Titans had the top three wicket-takers of the season, with 82 wickets between them. It explains why they topped the league table with ten wins and 20 points: they combined the season's best batter with its three most productive bowlers. Mohit Sharma's average of 13.37 was the best of any bowler with 15 or more wickets, a year after he had been with Gujarat as a net bowler in 2022.
The scoring curve, 2018–2025

The table shows 2023 as the break point. The highest total of the season, Lucknow's 257/5 at Mohali on 28 April 2023, was at the time the second-highest in IPL history, behind RCB's 263/5 in 2013. Within a year Sunrisers Hyderabad had made 287/3, and by 2025 there were 52 totals of 200-plus in a season.
How the Season Ended
Gujarat topped the league with 20 points, ahead of Chennai and Lucknow on 17 and Mumbai on 16. Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore both finished on 14 and missed out. The only washout of the season, Lucknow against Chennai on 3 May 2023, gave both sides the single point that separated them from Mumbai.
Chennai beat Gujarat by 15 runs in Qualifier 1 at Chepauk on 23 May 2023. Akash Madhwal took 5 for 5 as Mumbai beat Lucknow by 81 runs in the Eliminator on 24 May 2023. Gill's 129 and Mohit's 5 for 10 then sent Gujarat back to the final.
Rain washed out the scheduled final on 28 May 2023, so it was played on the reserve day. Gujarat made 214/4, with Sai Sudharsan scoring 96 off 47 balls, but Gill fell for 39 off 20 balls, stumped by Dhoni off Ravindra Jadeja in the seventh over. More rain reduced Chennai's target to 171 in 15 overs. Mohit Sharma took 3 for 36 and came close to defending it, until Jadeja hit the last two balls for six and four.
Legacy Impact: What 2023 Means in IPL 2026
The rule that stuck
The Impact Player rule was introduced in 2023, and every season since has been played with it. The scoring curve above has not reversed. The 2025 season averaged 188.8 in the first innings and produced 52 totals of 200-plus. When IPL 2026 batting line-ups are built eight or nine deep, and when par scores at flat venues are discussed in the 200s, that is the 2023 model still at work. Our Impact Player analysis tracks how strategy has changed season by season.
From Orange Cap to captain
Gill's 2023 season changed his standing at Gujarat. He has since taken over as captain, and in IPL 2026 he leads the Titans, with Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia from the 2023 side still alongside him. The question raised in 2023, whether a classical, technically correct opener could dominate in the new run-rate environment, has largely been settled. Gill showed that timing and placement, combined with acceleration in the death overs, could match the hitters.
The new baseline for prediction
The 2023 break also matters for anyone modelling T20 cricket. Data from before 2023 understates modern par scores, so a model that treats 2018 and 2025 innings as equivalent will misjudge almost every chase. This is why CricMind's Oracle relies on recent form, weighted towards the latest matches, rather than treating the whole archive since 2008 as equal evidence. Its pre-match calls on the predictions page are built mainly on how teams have played since scoring changed, not on the IPL's lower-scoring early years.
The pace of records
Kohli's 973 from 2016 remains the single-season record, and Gill's 890 remains second. Kohli's record season is reconstructed in our Kohli 973 deep-dive. With scoring rates now higher than in either year, a run at 1,000 runs in a season is more plausible than it has ever been, especially for an opener who reaches the playoffs and bats in 16 or 17 innings.
Three Takeaways
- 2023 was the IPL's scoring inflection point. Run rate jumped from 8.50 to 8.96, average first-innings scores rose by more than 11 runs, and 200-plus totals more than doubled from 18 to 37. Every season since has stayed at or above that level.
- Gill's 890 was a season of two halves. He made 375 runs in his first ten innings and 515 in his last seven, including three centuries in 12 days. No other batter that year scored more than 730.
- Gujarat's bowling was as historic as Gill's batting. Shami, Mohit Sharma and Rashid Khan took 82 wickets between them and filled the top three places in the wicket-taking table. Gujarat still lost the final on the reserve day by a Jadeja boundary.
