Melbourne Renegades left-arm fast bowler Jason Behrendorff will miss the entire BBL|16 season after undergoing shoulder surgery, cricket.com.au reported on 22 October 2026. The Renegades confirmed they will sign an injury replacement player.
What Was Announced
Behrendorff, 36, joined the Renegades last season on a three-year deal after more than a decade at the Perth Scorchers. He is the fourth most prolific bowler in men's Big Bash history with 145 wickets, at an economy rate of 7.15, the lowest of any bowler among the competition's top 15 wicket-takers.
His first season with the Renegades brought five wickets in eight matches at an economy rate of 9.29.
"It's disappointing to miss a BBL season, but I've got a clear plan with the medical team, and my focus is on getting my shoulder right so I can return to full fitness," Behrendorff said in a statement.
"I'm looking forward to supporting the team and staying involved throughout the season, being able to work closely with the bowlers and coaching staff."
He added that the break would also give him the chance to work with the Renegades' media team and broadcasters to share a different view of the game with fans.
What It Means
The Renegades lose one of their leading fast bowlers for a season in which they move their home games from Marvel Stadium to the MCG.
According to cricket.com.au, Tom Rogers is set to return from his own shoulder injury after missing all of last season, while Brendan Doggett and Will Sutherland are expected to take on more of the bowling load. Sam Elliott, who took a four-wicket haul against the Scorchers in BBL|15, is another option with the ball.
Gurinder Sandhu, who finished the BBL|15 regular season with an equal-high 19 wickets alongside Haris Rauf, has not yet re-signed with the Renegades.
The club has not named the injury replacement. Players currently without BBL|16 deals include Jackson Bird, who is yet to re-sign with Hobart Hurricanes, and internationals Hassan Ali, Luke Wood and Zaman Khan.
