Seventeen. That is how many times, in 1,243 IPL matches between April 2008 and the end of the 2026 season, a team has chased its target without losing a single wicket. It works out to roughly one ten-wicket win every 73 matches, about 1.4% of all games ever played in the league. In a format built on risk, where batters are told to swing from the first ball and accept the cost of getting out, finishing a chase with both openers still at the crease is the rarest kind of dominance the IPL produces.
It is also the cleanest. A big runs margin can flatter a team that had one hot hand; a ten-wicket win says something about all 20 overs of both innings. The bowling side kept the opposition below par, and then the batting side refused to give a single chance that stuck. From Adam Gilchrist's 109* off 47 balls at DY Patil in April 2008 to B Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill chasing 200 at Delhi in May 2025, this is the complete record of every IPL chase completed with all ten wickets in hand.
The Seventeen: How Unbeaten Chases Happened
Reading the 17 matches together, three distinct shapes appear. Some were mercy killings of collapsed batting line-ups. Some were sprints. And a handful, the most impressive of the lot, were long chases of serious totals by openers who never offered a chance.
The early years: Gilchrist, Watson and a rain-shortened Cape Town night (2008–2013)
The first ten-wicket win came on 27 April 2008, in the IPL's opening month. Mumbai Indians posted 154/7 at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, and Deccan Chargers knocked it off in 12.1 overs. Adam Gilchrist made 109* from 47 balls with 10 sixes, and VVS Laxman supplied a calm 37* at the other end. Nineteen seasons later, Gilchrist's innings is still the highest individual score in any ten-wicket IPL chase.
The second, in 2009, came in South Africa. At Newlands in Cape Town on 19 April 2009, rain cut the game to 12 overs a side. Kings XI Punjab made 104/7, and Delhi Daredevils chased a revised target in 4.5 overs, Virender Sehwag striking 38* off 16. It is the only rain-revised chase on the list.
The 2010s added variety. In March 2010, Royal Challengers Bangalore bowled Rajasthan Royals out for 92 at the Chinnaswamy and won in 10.4 overs, with Jacques Kallis unbeaten on 44. In May 2011 at the Wankhede, Shane Watson hit 89* off 47 alongside Rahul Dravid to chase 134 in 13.1 overs. And in May 2012 in Jaipur, Sachin Tendulkar (58*) and Dwayne Smith (87*) chased 163 for Mumbai in exactly 18 overs, helped by 18 extras, the most conceded in any of the 17 chases. In April 2013 at Mohali, Chennai Super Kings chased 139 as Mike Hussey made 86* and Murali Vijay 50*.
The sprints: when the chase took less than nine overs (2017, 2018, 2024)
Three ten-wicket wins arrived inside nine overs of a full-length game, and all three began with a bowling performance as dramatic as the batting.
On 30 April 2017 at Mohali, Kings XI Punjab bowled Delhi Daredevils out for 67 and chased it in 7.5 overs, Martin Guptill reaching 50* off 27. Sandeep Sharma was player of the match. A year later, on 14 May 2018 in Indore, RCB dismissed Kings XI for 88, with Umesh Yadav named player of the match, and chased 89 in 8.1 overs. Virat Kohli made 48* off 28 and Parthiv Patel 40* off 22.
Then came 8 May 2024 in Hyderabad, the most extraordinary ten-wicket win in IPL history. Lucknow Super Giants posted a respectable 165/4. Sunrisers Hyderabad chased it in 9.4 overs: 58 legal balls, 62 to spare. Travis Head made 89* off 30 balls and Abhishek Sharma 75* off 28. Between them they hit 16 fours and 14 sixes. The required rate was 8.30; SRH scored at 17.28. No other ten-wicket chase of a total above 100 was completed in under 10 overs.
The marathons: unbeaten chases of 175-plus (2017, 2020, 2021, 2025)
The hardest version of a ten-wicket win is the long chase of a big total, because there are simply more deliveries on which to get out. Four teams have chased 178 or more without losing a wicket:
- Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Lions, Rajkot, 7 April 2017 — target 184. Chris Lynn 93* off 41 and Gautam Gambhir 76* off 48, finished in 14.5 overs.
- Chennai Super Kings vs Kings XI Punjab, Dubai, 4 October 2020 — target 179. Faf du Plessis 87* and Shane Watson 83*, 53 balls each.
- Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Rajasthan Royals, Wankhede, 22 April 2021 — target 178. Devdutt Padikkal made 101* off 52, his maiden IPL century, with Kohli 72* off 47.
- Gujarat Titans vs Delhi Capitals, Arun Jaitley Stadium, 18 May 2025 — target 200. Sai Sudharsan 108* off 61 and Shubman Gill 93* off 53, done in 19 overs with six balls to spare.
The 2025 Gujarat Titans chase is the record: the highest target ever chased without losing a wicket in the IPL. Delhi's 199/3 was a winning total on most nights. Gujarat matched it with 205/0, and Gill hit seven sixes while Sai Sudharsan anchored, a near-perfect division of labour across 114 balls.
2020: the season of three
No season has produced more ten-wicket wins than 2020, played entirely in the UAE behind closed doors. CSK beat Kings XI in Dubai on 4 October. On 23 October in Sharjah, Mumbai Indians restricted CSK to 114/9, Trent Boult named player of the match, and chased it in 12.2 overs through Quinton de Kock (46*) and Ishan Kishan (68*). Kishan plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2026, but this innings was for Mumbai. Eleven days later, on 3 November, again in Sharjah, SRH beat Mumbai by ten wickets, David Warner 85* and Wriddhiman Saha 58*, with Shahbaz Nadeem the player of the match. Three in 60 matches is more than three times the league's long-run rate.

Table 2 — Franchise ledger: who does it, and who suffers it
| Franchise (incl. former names) | 10-wkt wins | 10-wkt defeats | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Challengers | 4 | 0 | +4 |
| Sunrisers Hyderabad | 3 | 0 | +3 |
| Chennai Super Kings | 2 | 1 | +1 |
| Kolkata Knight Riders | 1 | 0 | +1 |
| Gujarat Titans | 1 | 0 | +1 |
| Deccan Chargers (defunct) | 1 | 0 | +1 |
| Mumbai Indians | 2 | 3 | −1 |
| Lucknow Super Giants | 0 | 1 | −1 |
| Gujarat Lions (defunct) | 0 | 2 | −2 |
| Delhi Capitals / Daredevils | 1 | 3 | −2 |
| Rajasthan Royals | 1 | 3 | −2 |
| Punjab Kings / Kings XI | 1 | 4 | −3 |
Royal Challengers have never lost an IPL match by ten wickets and have won four that way, the most of any franchise. Punjab sit at the other end: four ten-wicket defeats in 2009, 2013, 2018 and 2020, more than any other side.
Table 3 — The fastest unbeaten chases (full-length matches)
| Rank | Chase | Target | Legal balls | Balls to spare | Run rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SRH vs LSG, 2024 | 166 | 58 | 62 | 17.28 |
| 2 | Kings XI vs DD, 2017 | 68 | 47 | 73 | 8.68 |
| 3 | RCB vs Kings XI, 2018 | 89 | 49 | 71 | 11.27 |
| 4 | RCB vs DD, 2015 | 96 | 63 | 57 | 9.43 |
| 5 | RCB vs RR, 2010 | 93 | 64 | 56 | 8.72 |
Kings XI's 2017 chase left the most balls unused, but Hyderabad's 2024 chase was the more remarkable: a target more than twice as large, chased at almost double the speed.
The Patterns Behind the Seventeen
Bowlers earn these wins as often as batters. In seven of the 17 matches, the player of the match was a bowler: Daniel Vettori (2009), Varun Aaron (2015), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016), Sandeep Sharma (2017), Umesh Yadav (2018), Trent Boult and Shahbaz Nadeem (both 2020). A ten-wicket win usually starts with a first innings that went badly wrong. Five of the 17 opponents were bowled out, and none of those reached 140.
The same names keep returning. Virat Kohli was unbeaten in three ten-wicket chases, in 2015, 2018 and 2021, more than any other player. Shane Watson (2011 and 2020), David Warner (2016 and 2020) and Gautam Gambhir (2009 and 2017) each appear twice. Three of the 17 chases contained a century: Gilchrist's 109* in 2008, Padikkal's 101* in 2021 and Sai Sudharsan's 108* in 2025.
The modern versions are bigger. Before 2017, no team had chased more than 163 without losing a wicket. Since then, five have chased 166 or more, in line with the scoring inflation traced in our 200-club history. Better pitches, the Impact Player rule and the six-hitting depth of modern top orders have changed what "comfortable" looks like.
Long droughts happen. There was no ten-wicket win in 2014, 2019, 2022, 2023 or 2026. The 2022–23 gap was the longest run of seasons without one since the league began, and it ended only when Head and Abhishek rewrote the idea of a powerplay.
Legacy Impact — What This Means in 2026
IPL 2026 finished without a single ten-wicket win. The closest was Royal Challengers' nine-wicket victory at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on 27 April 2026, a game in which Josh Hazlewood was player of the match. That fits the pattern: higher totals and deeper batting line-ups make collapses rarer, and collapses produce most ten-wicket wins.
But two of the IPL 2026 squads now hold the template for the modern version. Sunrisers Hyderabad still open with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, the pair behind the 9.4-over demolition of 2024. Gujarat Titans still have Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, the only opening pair to chase 200 unbeaten. Both pairs showed that a ten-wicket win no longer needs a weak opponent. It can come against a par total, chased by openers who simply never miss. For the full context of partnerships, see our highest partnerships record book, and for wins measured in runs rather than wickets, the biggest victory margins.
This is the gap CricMind's Oracle is designed to measure. A pre-match probability tells you who is more likely to win, not by how much, and the Matchup Machine shows step by step why one side's ratings carry an edge before a ball is bowled. When the Oracle makes one side a heavy favourite, a ten-wicket win is the most emphatic way that favourite can confirm it. It still happens in fewer than two matches in a hundred, and every call the Oracle locks is graded against the result on the predictions page.
Three Takeaways
- Ten-wicket wins are the IPL's rarest routine result. Only 17 in 1,243 matches through 2026, about 1.4%, and none at all in five of the 19 seasons.
- Royal Challengers own the record. Four ten-wicket wins, zero ten-wicket defeats, and Virat Kohli unbeaten in three of them, more than any other batter.
- The ceiling keeps rising. Gujarat Titans chased 200 unbeaten in 2025 and Sunrisers chased 166 in 58 balls in 2024. The next ten-wicket win is as likely to come against a big total as a collapse.
